The ugly face of liberalism
All those who think they know what's going on in Honduras and who support the Obama administrations' policy, please read the above, or perhaps this article entitled: Honduras Defends Its Democracy (a portion of which is quoted in the above).
Now, let's put this in context. I think most of us are aware that the 22nd amendment to the constitution prevents any American president from serving more than 2 terms in office. With that in mind, consider THIS scenario:
Let's say it's 2007 once again, and president George W. Bush decides he doesn't like the 22nd amendment and wants to change it. But alas, congress isn't likely to go along with it - even at the height of his popularity in late 2001 there was little likelihood the required super majorities in congress would have voted to repeal this amendment, let alone the required number of state governments. But alas, the evil (insert evil bwa-haha haaaaa here) president Bush decides he wants to bypass the constitution and have a simple popular vote referendum. Congress refuses, and so the vile Bush (insert eerie sounding organ music here) has the referendum ballots printed - or perhaps borrows some from a right wing extremist government - and intends to distribute them on his own authority - and screw congress.
The Supreme Court then decides to get into the act and declares his actions unconstitutional and instructs the military to prevent him from distributing his illegal referendum ballots. The Secretary of Defense informs the President that he will not allow his illegal referendum to take place. Bush then fires the Secretary and instructs a gang of supporters to storm the warehouse where the ballots are kept so as to distribute them on their own.
Now, in this hypothetical scenario, would the military (with the express authority of and under the instruction of both Congress and the Supreme Court) be justified in ARRESTING President Bush, REMOVING him from office, and if his threats of disregarding the constitution continued, even going so far as to exile him from the US (say, to Canada) - all in defense of our constitution?
If you agree that they would be RIGHT to do so, then we are in agreement. Although I supported George Bush throughout much of his presidency (even while disagreeing with some of his policies), I would NEVER support him in such a blatant effort to overthrow our constitution, our democracy, and the rule of law.
Well folks, the scenario I just described is EXACTLY what has happened in Honduras. And our current president supports the THUG who has been trying to overthrow the constitution, democracy, and rule of law in Honduras.
I'm hard pressed to think of any other occasion when I've been more ASHAMED of our government.
